Exam Pacing: How to Time a Practice Test

To time a practice test properly, do three things before you start the paper. First, divide the section's minutes by its question count to get a per-question pace, then subtract a review reserve so the pace has slack built into it. Second, split the section into four equal segments and write down how many questions you should have finished at the end of each one, so a checkpoint alarm tells you where you stand rather than just that time is passing. Third, decide your stop rule in advance: any single question that runs past roughly twice your pace gets marked and abandoned. Then run the segments as a repeating interval timer, not as a stopwatch you have to keep glancing at, because glancing at a clock is itself a tax on the paper.

Most timed practice goes like this. You set a countdown for the whole section, start the paper, look up at question 19, and discover you have eleven minutes for eight questions. The clock told you the truth the entire time. It just never told you the one thing you needed, which is whether you were ahead or behind, and by how much, while there was still room to do something about it.

A section timer answers "how long is left". A pacing structure answers "am I on track". Those are different questions and they need different setups.

How do you turn a section into a per-question pace?

The arithmetic is two lines. Take the minutes, convert to seconds, subtract a review reserve, and divide by the number of questions.

Use a real one. The digital SAT's Reading and Writing section runs 64 minutes and contains 54 questions, delivered as two equal 32-minute modules, so one module is 32 minutes and 27 questions. The Math section is 70 minutes and 44 questions across two 35-minute modules, and there is a 10-minute break between the two sections. Those figures come from the College Board's own description of how the SAT is structured, checked on 2 September 2026. Verify them yourself before you build a session around them, because test makers change formats and a pacing plan built on last year's numbers is worse than no plan.

So, one Reading and Writing module:

  • 32 minutes is 1,920 seconds.
  • 1,920 divided by 27 questions is 71 seconds, or about 1 minute 11 seconds each.

That is the raw pace, and it is the number most people stop at. It is also the number that gets you to the last question with zero seconds left and nothing checked. Take a reserve off the top first:

  • Reserve 2 minutes for reviewing flagged questions. That leaves 30 minutes, or 1,800 seconds.
  • 1,800 divided by 27 is 67 seconds, near enough 1 minute 7 seconds each.

Four seconds a question does not sound like much. Across 27 questions it is the two minutes that let you go back to the three you were unsure about, and those three are usually worth more than the four seconds ever were.

Two adjustments worth making before you write the number down:

Weight by marks, not by count, when the paper is mixed. If a section has 40 multiple-choice worth 60 marks and two essays worth 40 marks, the questions are not equivalent and a flat per-question pace will quietly rob the essays. Divide the time in the same proportion as the marks, then work out a pace inside each part.

Round down, never up. A pace of 67 seconds becomes 65 in your head. Rounding up feels generous and it compounds: three seconds of generosity per question is 81 seconds of debt by the end of the module.

Where should the checkpoints sit?

Four equal segments, three alarms. That is the whole rule, and the reason for it is that a quarter is short enough to correct and long enough to be meaningful.

For the 32-minute module: four segments of 8 minutes. Twenty-seven questions across four segments is 6.75, so round up to 7 each time and let the rounding pile up in your favour.

The final segment carries only six questions instead of seven. That is deliberate. It is where the reserve lives, and it is why arriving at checkpoint 3 exactly on 21 is a good outcome rather than a tight one.

Why three alarms and not one halfway marker: with a single midpoint you learn you are behind at minute 16, when you have 16 minutes to recover a deficit built over 16 minutes. With quarters you learn at minute 8, when the hole is a quarter of the size and the fix is a small adjustment rather than a sprint. Why not six or eight alarms: past a point the chime becomes the interruption, and you stop reading the paper and start managing the timer.

Build it as a repeating interval, not as a stopwatch. On the interval timer, set Work to 480 seconds, Rest to 0, and Rounds to 4. It chimes at every boundary, shows "round 3 of 4" with a row of dots, and puts the remaining time and the round number in the browser tab title. Four rounds of 8 minutes ends at exactly 32:00 with an end-of-session alarm. The work field takes 5 to 600 seconds, so any checkpoint segment up to 10 minutes fits directly. For longer segments, split them: a 15-minute checkpoint is two rounds of 450 seconds, and you simply ignore the intermediate chime, or you accept the extra checkpoint as free information.

The tool holds the screen awake while a session runs, and each phase ends at a timestamp taken from your system clock rather than by counting ticks, so a busy machine cannot make a segment run long. Sound is a different matter from timekeeping in a browser, and the background tab behaviour of online timers is worth understanding before you rely on a chime from a tab you have buried. For a practice test, leave the timer tab visible on a second screen or a phone propped beside the paper. That is also closer to the real thing, where the clock is on the wall or in the corner of the screen and not something you control.

How do you simulate reading time and breaks?

Reading time and breaks are part of the paper. If you skip them in practice, the first time you experience them is on the day, which is exactly the situation timed practice exists to prevent. Cornell's learning centre makes the same point in its guidance on what to do with practice exams: match the conditions, including the time you will actually have, or the rehearsal is measuring something other than the exam.

The chain for a full sitting looks like this:

  1. Perusal or reading time, if your exam has it. A plain countdown on the countdown timer. Do not start the section timer until it ends, and do not write during it if the rules say you cannot. The discipline of not writing is part of what you are practising.
  2. Section one. The four-round interval described above.
  3. The break. A real countdown, sitting down, away from the paper. The digital SAT's break between sections is 10 minutes, so run a 10 minute timer and take all of it. Cutting the break short in practice teaches you a pace you cannot hold on the day, and taking twelve minutes teaches you nothing about coming back cold.
  4. Section two. Its own interval structure, with its own pace, because the section is a different length and a different question count.

Set the break timer before you start the break, not after you have made a cup of tea, for the same reason you set the section timer before the section.

What do you do when you are already behind?

Behind at a checkpoint is information, and it has a specific response depending on the size of the gap. Decide these now, because the middle of a section is a bad place to invent policy.

One question behind. Do nothing. That is inside the noise of the rounding and the reserve.

Two or three behind. Tighten the stop rule for the next segment only. Anything that has not resolved by your per-question pace gets marked and left, no second pass, no "one more line of working". You are not trying to make up the deficit in this segment, you are trying to stop it growing.

Four or more behind. Stop trying to recover it inside the order of the paper. Scan the remaining questions and do the ones you can finish quickly first. A deficit that large usually means one or two questions ate the segment, and the remedy is to bank the easy marks that are still sitting there rather than to speed up uniformly, which mostly produces errors on questions you could have got.

The stop rule itself. Twice your per-question pace, and it is a hard stop. At 67 seconds a question, that is about 2 minutes 15 seconds. Mark the question, write down anything you have worked out so it is not lost, move on. A question you have spent two and a half minutes on and not cracked is rarely a question the next thirty seconds will crack, and it is always worth less than the two questions you could have answered instead. This is the rule people find hardest to obey and it is the one that changes scores most.

Practise the abandonment. In a practice test, deliberately abandon something at the cap even when you can feel the answer arriving, so that the movement is familiar. Coming back to a marked question with four minutes left and fresh eyes is a normal and good outcome, not a failure.

Should you time individual questions in practice?

Yes, but as a separate diagnostic exercise rather than as your standing practice mode. Timing every question in every session turns a paper into a series of 27 tiny emergencies and trains the wrong reflex.

Run it as a one-off measurement instead. Use the stopwatch with laps, hit Lap as you finish each question, and let it record the split. It lists laps newest first with the total elapsed, and it reports the fastest, slowest and average of the set, which is the whole point: you are not looking for your average, you are looking for the shape of the distribution.

What the lap table tells you that a section timer cannot:

  • Your true average pace, which is almost always slower than the pace you assume when you plan.
  • The tail. Two or three questions usually account for a large share of the section. Those are your stop-rule cases and knowing what type they are is more useful than knowing your average.
  • The warm-up cost. The first two or three questions are frequently the slowest, which is an argument for starting with something you can definitely do rather than with question one.

Do this once at the start of a study block and once near the end. Practice testing is one of the two techniques that came out with a high utility rating in a well-known review of learning techniques, Dunlosky and colleagues in Psychological Science in the Public Interest, so the testing is doing real work regardless of the timing layer. The timing layer is what turns it into pacing practice as well as retrieval practice.

The same method on an exam you have never sat

The point of the method is that it does not need the exam to be famous. Here is a generic worked example, invented for illustration and not describing any specific paper: a 90-minute departmental final, 40 multiple-choice questions worth 60 marks, plus two short essays worth 20 marks each.

Step 1, split by marks. Marks run 60 to 40, so time should run 60 to 40. Of 90 minutes that is 54 for the multiple-choice and 36 for the essays. Round to structural boundaries: 45 minutes for the multiple-choice, 30 for the essays, 15 held back for review. That is a 17% reserve, which is generous, and if you would rather buy essay time with it, move ten minutes across and keep five.

Step 2, get the pace inside each part. 45 minutes for 40 questions is 67 seconds each, the same order as before. Each essay gets 15 minutes, of which the first 3 are an outline.

Step 3, pick a segment length that lands on the seams. Six segments of 15 minutes, because 45 and 30 and 15 all divide by 15. On the interval timer: Work 900 seconds, Rest 0, Rounds 6.

Step 4, set the stop rule. 2 minutes 15 on any multiple-choice question. For the essays the equivalent rule is a hard stop on the outline at 3 minutes, because an essay that is still being planned at minute 6 will not be finished.

Four steps, no knowledge of the exam required beyond its length, its question count and its mark distribution. All three of those are printed on the front of the paper or in the syllabus.

How do you review pacing after the test?

Score the paper, then score the clock separately. They are different problems with different fixes and treating them as one is why "I ran out of time" persists across a dozen practice tests.

Write down four numbers after every timed sitting:

  1. Questions unanswered. Pure pacing loss. These cost you marks you might well have earned.
  2. Questions answered wrong that you knew. Usually rushing, and usually a symptom of trying to recover a deficit rather than of your pace being wrong.
  3. Checkpoint gaps. Where you actually were at each of the three alarms, against where you planned to be. A consistent gap at checkpoint 1 across several tests means your pace assumption is wrong. A gap that only opens at checkpoint 3 means fatigue or a hard cluster near the end.
  4. Stop-rule breaches. How many times you blew past twice your pace. This is the number that predicts the others.

If the checkpoint gaps are consistently negative, the honest fix is not to go faster. It is to lower the number of questions you expect to have done, accept that you will leave some, and pick which ones deliberately rather than by running out of clock. A pace plan you can execute beats an aspirational one you cannot.

How many minutes per question should I allow?

Take the section's total minutes, subtract a review reserve of roughly 5 to 10%, and divide by the number of questions. For a 32-minute, 27-question digital SAT Reading and Writing module that comes to about 67 seconds. For a 35-minute, 22-question Math module it comes to about 90 seconds. Do the arithmetic for your own paper rather than borrowing a number from another exam, and if the questions are worth different marks, split the time by marks first and then work out a pace inside each part.

Should I use a stopwatch or a countdown for practice tests?

A countdown for the section, because a real exam counts down and you want the same information you will have on the day. A stopwatch with laps only for a one-off diagnostic where you are measuring your per-question distribution. The best of both is a repeating interval timer, which counts down inside each segment while telling you which segment you are in, so you get remaining time and position in one glance.

Is it worth timing untimed practice?

Not while you are still learning the material. Early practice is for retrieval and for finding gaps, and a clock running over that just adds pressure to the part of the process that does not need it. Add the clock once the content is roughly in place, then keep it on. A useful pattern is to work through a set untimed, then re-sit an equivalent set under full timing a few days later, and treat the difference between the two scores as your pacing cost.

How do I stop panicking when the clock runs down?

A pacing structure removes one specific source of it, which is uncertainty about where you stand. Knowing at minute 8 that you are on 7 of 27 is calmer than not knowing anything until minute 25, and having a stop rule decided in advance means you never have to make a hard call under pressure. Rehearse the ending too, because sitting the last five minutes of a section repeatedly makes those five minutes ordinary. That is the extent of what a timer can do. If the feeling is persistent, or it turns up in situations that have nothing to do with exams, that is worth raising with someone qualified rather than something to solve with a better setup.
