Metronome Practice: Choosing a Tempo to Learn At

Practise at the fastest tempo you can play cleanly, not the fastest tempo you can play. There is no universal BPM for practice, because the right number belongs to the passage and to you on that day. Find it by starting well below where you think you are, playing the passage correctly several times in a row, and nudging the click up in small steps until mistakes appear. The last tempo before they appeared is your clean tempo, and that is where the real work happens. When something goes wrong, raising or lowering the number is only one of four fixes. Depending on where the mistakes are, dropping the tempo, subdividing the beat, isolating one bar, or turning the click off for a while will usually do more.

That rule is taught in almost every lesson room and written down in very few places. The rest of this post is the working detail: how to find your clean tempo in a couple of minutes, how big each step up should be, what to do when it falls apart, and a decision tree for matching the fix to the mistake.

What tempo should you practise at?

The honest answer is a number you measure, not one you look up. Advice like "start at 60" or "most people practise at 80 to 120" is harmless as a first guess and useless as a rule, because a scale you have played for ten years and a run you learned yesterday do not share a tempo.

What teachers agree on is the shape of the answer. Practice speed should be set by accuracy, and the target performance tempo is a destination rather than a starting point. Play at a speed where the notes, the rhythm and the physical motion are all correct, because whatever you repeat is what you get better at, including the mistakes.

There is research behind the idea that the quality of each attempt matters more than the amount of practice. In a study published in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Duke, Simmons and Cash observed 17 advanced pianists practising a difficult three-measure passage and then tested how well each one played it the next day. Practice time and the number of attempts showed no significant relationship with how well they played at the retention test. What did track with the result was the percentage of practice trials performed correctly and the number of trials performed incorrectly. It is one study with a small group of pianists, so treat it as support for the teaching consensus rather than proof of an exact method. But it points the same way the consensus does: an hour of messy repetitions at speed is not the same thing as an hour of practice.

That gives you a working definition. Your practice tempo is the fastest tempo at which most of your attempts are correct.

How do you find your clean tempo?

This takes a couple of minutes and one decision you have to be strict about: what counts as clean. Clean means right notes, right rhythm, no hesitation before the hard spot, and no tension you would not want to keep. "Mostly fine apart from bar 6" is not clean.

  1. Set a tempo you are sure is too slow. If you think you can play the passage at 100, start somewhere around 70. Being too slow costs you a minute. Being too fast costs you the session.
  2. Play the passage three times in a row with the click. All three have to be clean. One miss resets the count.
  3. Step up and repeat. Raise the tempo a little and play three more clean attempts.
  4. Stop at the first tempo where you cannot get three in a row. Your clean tempo is the step before it.
  5. Write the number down. Next session you start just below it, not at it, because yesterday's clean tempo is usually a little generous on a cold start.

The count of three is a teaching convention rather than a researched figure. Some teachers ask for five. The point is that one lucky pass does not count.

How big should each tempo increase be?

Small. Common teaching advice runs from a couple of BPM to about 5 BPM per step, and it gets smaller as you get closer to your limit. A jump of 10 or 20 BPM usually means you skip the tempo where the passage was about to become secure.

A practical pattern:

Two habits keep this honest. First, when you step up and it falls apart, go back further than the last clean step, not just to it. Second, end the session a step or two below your best tempo on a clean run. The last thing you played is the version you remember.

When should you subdivide instead of speeding up?

Subdividing means hearing, counting or clicking the smaller units inside the beat: eighth notes or sixteenth notes instead of only quarter notes. It is the right move whenever the problem is evenness rather than speed.

The signs:

  • The notes are right but uneven. A run of sixteenths comes out as a gallop, or the second and fourth notes of a group are squashed.
  • Long notes and rests get shortened. You are counting beats but not feeling what happens between them.
  • The click feels far apart. At slow tempos there is a lot of silence between clicks, and your timing wanders inside it.

That last one matters more than it sounds. Slow is not automatically easy. In a motion capture study in the Journal of Motor Behavior, Burger and Wöllner had 36 people repeat a circular arm and leg movement at three tempos (30, 45 and 67 BPM) and found that keeping the movement consistent was more challenging at the slower tempi than the faster ones. The authors suggest slow movement may need more attentional focus. It was a dance movement task, not instrument practice, so read it as a reason to take slow practice seriously rather than a measurement of your playing. But it matches what most players notice: at a very slow click, the gaps are where the timing goes.

How to subdivide with a metronome that clicks on the beat:

  • Halve the tempo and play two notes per click. If a run of eighth notes is uneven at 80, set 80 and play two notes per click. If the problem persists, drop to 60 and keep two per click.
  • Double the tempo and treat each click as an eighth note. A passage at 60 with the click at 120 gives you a pulse on every eighth note, which removes the long gaps.
  • Count out loud. "One and two and" at a slow tempo does a lot of the work a subdivision setting would.

Subdividing is not a detour from getting faster. Evenness at a slow tempo is what lets the passage hold together when the number goes up.

Should you ever practise without a metronome?

Yes, and on purpose. The click is a training tool, not a permanent partner. Teachers commonly recommend three situations where it should be off.

  • When you are still learning the notes. If you have to stop to find a fingering, a click only adds panic. Learn the passage slowly and freely first, then add the metronome once you can play it through without stopping.
  • When you are shaping the music. Rubato, phrasing and pacing are deliberately flexible. Work the phrasing without the click once the notes and rhythm are secure.
  • When you are checking whether the timing is yours. Play a passage you have drilled with the click, turn it off, and record yourself. If it holds, the timing has moved inside you. If it drifts, you know where to go back to.

There is also a middle ground between click on and click off: thin the click out. Set the metronome to half your tempo so it lands only on beats 2 and 4, or set it very slow so it lands only on the first beat of each bar, and keep the beats in between yourself. You still get a reference, but you are responsible for most of the time.

How do you fix rushing in one specific bar?

Rushing in one place is information. It almost always means that bar is harder than its neighbours: an awkward fingering, a shift, a string crossing, a breath, a page turn. You speed up to get it over with.

  1. Loop the bar, plus one note on each side. Play from the last note before it to the first note after it. The join is usually where the rush starts.
  2. Drop the tempo for that bar only. Find its clean tempo the same way you did for the passage. It may be well below the rest of the piece, and that is fine.
  3. Find the physical cause. Play it slowly without the click and watch what your hands, arms or breath do. If a fingering or a shift is forcing the rush, change that first. A metronome will not fix a movement problem.
  4. Subdivide inside it. Rushed bars often hide a squashed note or a short rest. Click or count the smaller units.
  5. Rejoin it to the passage gradually. Play the bar before plus the problem bar, then two bars before, and so on, at a tempo where the whole chunk is clean.

If the same mistake survives every fix on this list, timing is probably not the real problem. Technique, tension or setup usually is, and a teacher watching you play for five minutes will spot it faster than any metronome.

Frequently asked questions

Is 60 BPM too slow to practise at?

Not if it is where you play cleanly. Many passages start well below 60 when they are new. The one caution is that very slow tempos can be harder to keep steady than people expect, because the gaps between clicks are long. Research on movement timing points in that direction too: the slow condition was the least consistent in the Burger and Wöllner study. If 60 feels shaky rather than easy, double the metronome to 120 and treat each click as an eighth note.

How much should I raise the tempo each session?

Do not plan a fixed rise. Start each session a little below your last clean tempo, warm back up to it, and then climb in 2 to 4 BPM steps for as long as your runs stay clean. Some days you will finish higher than last time, some days at the same number, and some days lower. What you are trying to protect is the proportion of correct attempts, not the size of the number.

Why do I speed up without noticing?

Two common reasons. The first is a hard spot: players tend to rush toward and through the difficult bar. The second is that everyone has a natural pace. In a study of musicians' spontaneous playing rates, Zamm, Wang and Palmer found that timing was most stable at each musician's own natural rate, and that when musicians played at faster or slower rates their tempo drifted back toward it. If your natural pace is faster than the tempo you are practising, you will tend to creep forward. A metronome catches the drift, and subdividing makes it easier to hold the slower tempo.

Should I practise with the click on every beat?

At first, yes. A click on every beat is the easiest reference while you are learning the passage and finding your clean tempo. Once the passage is secure, thin it out. A click on beats 2 and 4, or only on beat 1 of each bar, makes you keep more of the time yourself, which is closer to playing without a metronome at all.
